The Shadow Men

The Shadow Men
Are here again
Don’t-know-where
And
Don’t-know-when
Their faces I never see
Yet they’re horribly familiar to me

The Shadow Men
Are here again
Behind closed doors
I hear their roars
They’re all about
Heartache, fear and shame
A drought of faith
No soothing rain

The Shadow Men
Delight in pain
Take over your life
You’re never the same
Unless the unthinkable
Comes to you
And the sun shines in, drying the dew
Illuminating their hiding places
Golden on their shadowy sad faces

Never again
The Shadow Men
No sinister soldiers
Hell-bent on defeat
Just what they really are:
Sadness
Depression
And
Doubt

Old, sad survivors
Of a war they’ve lost
Shuffling away
And counting the cost
